The Gardens at Matterhorn

The Gardens at Matterhorn are an inspiring and educational destination
for all garden enthusiasts. We are honored to be recognized with
two recent awards: the Perennial Plant Association’s 2004
Landscape Design Award Program Honor Award, and the 2003 Environmental
Beautification Grand Prize Award, presented by the New York State
Nurseryman’s Association. The Gardens at Matterhorn are open
year-round and admission may be purchased in The Gift Shop. We can
also accommodate special events and photo shoots by appointment.
We invite you to visit our award-winning gardens throughout the
year to enjoy their beauty in all four seasons. The following are
some of the gardens that you may enjoy on your visit.
The David Austin Rose Garden
The design of the Rose Garden is based on the Renaissance
Garden at David Austin Roses in the United Kingdom. The planting
consists mainly of David Austin’s English Roses, with other
varieties of Old, Shrub, Climbing and Rambling Roses. The English
Roses have been planted in a number of different ways which should
provide inspiration for your own garden. The rose garden is part
of a larger garden that is a delight to walk around at all times
of the year and adjoins the nursery where you can select from a
very large range of plants and associated goods for your garden.
Fern Garden
Ferns offer a tremendous diversity of frond size and shape,
texture and color - making them a very useful plant in garden design
today. Over 100 years ago, ferns were one of the most popular plants
in English gardens - and at last, American gardeners are experiencing
a similar fern craze. Since they have been around for more than
300 million years, it seems high time for these Jurassic plants
to make a splash. Our Fern Garden is interplanted with other shade
plants for a lovely effect alongside the pond. All of the ferns
that are planted in the garden are cultivated at the Nursery and
are available for purchase.
Hosta Garden
Hostas are popular plants with outstanding foliage color
and texture, as well as beautiful lily-like flowers. Their leaves
come in a range of colors including many shades of green, blue-gray,
gold, yellow, and white. Leaf shapes vary from long and lance-like,
to oblong, to heart-shaped. Hosta leaves can be smooth, puckered,
ribbed, or leathery in texture. Our garden includes over 30 varieties
of Hosta to illustrate their range of color and form.
Folly Garden
Our Folly Garden features fantasy garden buildings from England
that add a sudden and unexpected encounter while walking through
the garden. Inspired by Gothic architecture and Olde English masonry,
the Folly Garden reflects our interest in providing a fresh and
exciting palette of ideas for your home landscape design.
